Carl\'s Biography
Biography? Schmiography! I think the art should speak for itself! I hope the reason you buy my paintings is that you like them, not because of some award I got in college or who my show business friends are! Anyway, I was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1947. I\\\'m an artist and I\\\'ve done a whole bunch of stuff. When I was 18 years-old I was co-chair of the first multi-media convention ever held, The Detroit Triple Fan Fair, (comics, movies, and science fiction). I wanted to learn to be an illustrator like my idol, Frank Frazetta. I tried to attend art school in California, but I was rejected because the admissions board thought my work was too \\\"cartoony\\\"! Discouraged, I went back to Detroit where I discovered Gary Grimshaw was doing posters for a local concert venue called The Grande Ballroom. Gary gave me a job helping out with the art and I was able to create posters for such bands as The Who, Pink Floyd, and Jefferson Airplane and more, using graphics and lettering that I created from scratch. Little did I know that these rock and roll posters from the \\\'60\\\'s would become hugely collectible today. I consider myself to be self-taught. In the 1970\\\'s I was a well-known science fiction and fantasy artist, having done almost 300 book covers as well as illustrations for magazines and other areas of publishing. In the 1980\\\'s I quit working for the publishing industry and went on to pursue the fine art career that you see here. In 1993 I wrote and self-published a book about my life, but it has since sold out. You can still buy copies of it on the secondary market at sites like eBay or from private collectors. I called it, \\\"Carl Lundgren, great artist\\\". If you need a more detailed description of my world, please try and get a copy of this book. (To try and re-write it here would drive me mad!)
I\'ve travelled a lot and I\'ve lived all over the place. I have just spent the last 15 years living in a small town in rural Florida. I loved the climate and the scenery was beautiful, but there came a time when I had to re-evaluate my choices. I was not into boating, fishing, golf or painting Florida wildlife, and the Florida street art fair circuit had become stale as well. All of my business was being generated by a customer base located back in my home state of Michigan. So, after nearly a thirty year absence, my wife and I have moved back \\\"up north\\\". We sold one of our Florida properties and have since rented a beautiful, large apartment in downtown Detroit. I also rented 1,800 sq. feet of studio space in an industrial/artist center about three miles from my home. I am happy to be back and out of my \\\"retirement\\\" and I am actively pursuing my career. I just recently had my work exhibited in one of the area\\\'s finest contemporary galleries, CPop, and I am looking forward to meeting more artists and doing more shows.
